What if I told your that all those socks that mysteriously go missing did so by choice? What if they were just worn out, tired of being stepped on, forced to walk lock step in a world that didn’t care... and simply walked away from it all?
This is the Legend of the Lonely Socks. A bold, and defiant group of garments that chose freedom over footwear. They called themselves the “Woven Ones”, but in reality there weren’t much more than a mismatched collection of rag tag non-conformists who liked to hang out in back of the dryer, getting high on sock lint, and dancing to the funky beats of the laundry machines. They were celebrated as heroes by the “Pairs”, even though they left millions of orphaned socks behind with no mate.
Lacking purpose, long forgotten and floundering in their freedom, the “Woven Ones” began to unravel and fade from existence. And the “Orphans” they left behind were discarded as trash and living in squalor. The reality is that Socks as a species are not meant to be alone and are communal by nature. They thrive in pairs and have little chance of survival if left alone for too long. It is told that a pair of sentient socks who referred to themselves in the singular by the name “Supreme” recognized that the socks had become disconnected from their source and unless they mended their ways they would soon cease to exist.
Soon after images of a lone sock began appearing in back alleys and out of the way places. Legend has it that these images were calling cards signifying the gathering place for a secret society that became known as “The Lonely Socks Social Club.”
What goes on inside the doors of the club is surrounded in mystery. Some say it’s just a place to “pair up”, and other various forms of debauchery. Critics of that assessment cite the Supreme’s message of togetherness and claim it’s a loving, inclusive community where everyone is welcome, regardless of length, material, style, or thickness.
Interest in the club, and the mystique associated with it piqued in the 1970’s and the club appeared to be all but forgotten, that is until recently, when images of the “Lone Sock” inexplicably started showing up again, only this time on the internet. Are they back? Had they ever gone away? Murmurs started to circulate on Discord about this secretive society? Who are the members? Is it true their members include celebrities, politicians, famous artists, and musicians? What really goes on behind those closed doors? And our they exactly what the world needs right now?
